The Day of Your Exam
Take your prescribed medication as directed.
Wear or bring the corrective lenses used while driving.
Bring your hearing aids if you rely on them.
Carry an updated medication list.
Arrive ready to provide a urine sample.
Never change or skip prescribed treatment solely to influence an examination result unless your treating clinician directs you to do so.

Blood Pressure Treatment
Continue your medicine as prescribed and bring recent readings if you track them at home. The clinic will take its own measurement during your exam.
Diabetes Management
Bring current treatment information and relevant laboratory or glucose records. Drivers who use insulin may need specific documentation under federal requirements.
Sleep Apnea Therapy
Bring recent PAP usage or compliance data and any relevant information from the clinician overseeing your treatment.
Heart or Neurological Care
Certain diagnoses may require specialist documentation, recent test results, or evidence of stability.
Medications With Possible Driving Effects
The examiner may request information about why a medication is prescribed, how long you have taken it, and whether it causes side effects that could affect safe driving.
Your Exam May End in One of Four Ways

Certified
You meet the applicable requirements and receive certification for the period determined by the examiner.
Certified With Earlier Follow-Up
You qualify, but ongoing monitoring requires another examination sooner than the maximum interval.
Decision Pending
More records, testing, or clarification are needed before the examiner can complete the determination.
Not Currently Certified
The findings do not meet applicable medical standards at that time. A DOT medical certificate may be valid for up to 24 months, although some medical findings call for a shorter certification period.
Two Services Drivers Often Confuse

DOT Physical
Evaluates whether a driver meets applicable medical standards for commercial vehicle operation. Routine urinalysis is generally part of this examination.
DOT Drug Test

After You Leave the Clinic
Your responsibilities may continue after the examination. Before returning to work, confirm:
Whether your employer needs a copy of your certificate
Whether medical information must be submitted to the state
That your licensing record reflects any required update
The expiration date of your new certificate
Whether the examiner requested follow-up care or monitoring
